Did you know red diamonds are the rarest diamonds on earth? Fewer than 30 natural ones exist larger than a small seed. That alone pushes prices past $1 million per carat. Most stores will never carry one in their lifetime.

What Are Natural Red Diamonds?

Natural red diamonds do not get their colour from trace elements the way blue or yellow diamonds do. The red comes from a structural distortion in the crystal lattice called plastic deformation. The Hancock Red, just 0.95 carats, sold at auction in 1987 for over $880,000. In 2022 a 1.21 carat fancy orangy red sold for over $1.2 million per carat at Heritage Auctions. These are not store diamonds. These are collector assets.

What Are Lab-Grown Red Diamonds?

Lab grown red diamonds are real diamonds. In fact, these diamonds come with the same carbon structure, hardness at 10 on the Mohs scale, and optical properties. The colour is introduced deliberately during or after the growth process, not through something that happened underground over millions of years.

Two methods are used to grow them.

  • HPHT diamonds get their red through controlled high temperature and pressure after the crystal forms. This creates the same lattice distortion that happens naturally. 
  • CVD diamonds go through post-growth irradiation and annealing to reach consistent red saturation.

Shape matters more with red diamonds than with any other colour. For your information, let us tell you that radiant, cushion, and oval cuts keep the colour concentrated in the center. Round brilliant spreads it out and weakens it. That is why red diamonds rarely come in a round shape.

Lab grown red diamonds are available in all three of those cuts, which means you are not choosing between what you want and what exists.

Lab created diamonds in the red category priced differently at every quality tier. The exact figure depends on carat weight, cut, and clarity grade, but the gap versus natural red is enormous. A lab grown red at 1 carat is accessible for jewelry retail at margins that make commercial sense.

Availability and Supply Chain Differences

Natural red diamonds barely reach the open market. When they do appear, it is through major auction houses like Sotheby’s or Christie’s, not through standard diamond wholesalers. Building a retail product line around them is not possible.

Lab grown red diamonds can be ordered, specified by grade, and received on a repeatable timeline. Supply chain consistency is something natural reds simply cannot offer. For retailers building a colored diamond range, reliability matters as much as price.
