Bespoke Lab Grown Diamonds for Jewelry Brands

Bespoke Lab Grown Diamonds for Jewelry Brands

Bespoke lab grown diamonds are grown and cut to a jewelry brand’s own specification. The real questions are who owns the design and what the lab report covers. This guide covers diamonds for jewelry brands, and it flags where public data runs out.

Why Design Matters More as Diamond Prices Fall

Cheaper diamonds leave more of your price to design and brand. In The Knot’s 2026 study of couples married in 2025, 61% had a lab grown center diamond. Edahn Golan reports wholesale prices fell 14% year over year in Q1 2026. Diamond prices are easy to compare online. A design only you sell is harder to compare. That is our reading of the data.

OEM vs ODM: Which Model Suits You

OEM: You bring the design and the maker builds it. Ask the contract to name who owns the molds and CAD files, and get that in writing before production starts.

ODM: The maker owns a base design, and you choose from it or modify it. Others can buy similar pieces unless you pay for exclusivity. Made to order diamonds fit here too, though the design is shared. A private label is only a label. Read the contract for exclusivity.

Custom Lab Grown Jewelry Manufacturing: From Spec to Finished Piece

Step 1: Specify the Diamond

GIA moved its lab grown reports to Premium and Standard tiers on October 1, 2025, with cut grades for rounds only. GIA’s 2024 research found about 80% of CVD diamonds it received since 2020 had post-growth processing. So state whether you want as-grown or treated.

Step 2: CAD, Sample and Production

CAD comes first, then an approved sample, then production. Each stage has its own timeline, and it changes with design detail and order size. Ask your manufacturer for a dated schedule for all three, and get it in writing before you approve the CAD.

Step 3: Report Match and QC

GIA and IGI laser-inscribe each diamond’s girdle with a report number, and GCAL does too. Match it to the report under magnification. Agree the QC checks before the first order, and test them on it.

Lab Grown Diamond Certification and FTC Rules for Custom Orders

What Reports Cover

A lab report describes the loose diamond. It does not describe the finished piece. So tie any lab claim to the diamond, and name the lab. That is our reading of the FTC’s grade-claim rule. GCAL 8X means Excellent in all eight cut factors.

FTC Disclosure Rules

The FTC Jewelry Guides are non-binding, but the FTC can act on deceptive claims. Under the Guides, a lab grown diamond counts as a diamond. FTC staff say the lab grown disclosure should sit close to the word diamond. The Guides call “real” or “natural” deceptive for lab grown products. As we read them, they do not require a certificate. This is general information, so check your wording with a lawyer.

What a Custom Manufacturing Agreement Should Cover

MOQ and Design Protection

MOQ is normally set per project, so ask for it in pieces and in diamonds, separately. A U.S. design patent lasts 15 years from grant, and you must file within a year of showing or selling the design. An NDA alone creates no design rights.

Diamond Sourcing

Ask for a report on every center diamond and batch records for the small ones. IGI’s lab grown reports state the growth process and whether post-growth treatment is indicated. Read both lines before you approve.

Bespoke Lab Grown Diamonds: Custom Orders

Problems in a custom order cost less to catch early, before the first deposit. Be wary of a supplier who:

  • Cannot name the growth method, HPHT or CVD.
  • Has no report for each center diamond.
  • Gives no statement on post-growth treatment, so you can’t tell as-grown from treated.
  • Stays silent on finishing, plating or setting details.
  • Does not offer a sample, or has no re-sampling step before production.
  • Quotes a timeline with no room for revisions.
  • Dodges the question of who owns the molds and CAD files.
  • Offers a promise on QC but no agreed checks.

The diamond carries a lab report, from GIA, IGI or GCAL. The finished piece has none, and the Jewelry Guides do not require one either.

Not always you. Get the design, mold and CAD ownership in writing, sign an NDA, and file a design patent before you show the piece.
