What Is A Diamond Tester – Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Pass A Diamond Tester?

Differentiating between lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds can be hard for the layman. Even diamond experts have to rely on special equipment or devices to help them assess diamonds.

In this blog, we focus on how laboratory diamonds can be tested using diamond tester equipment.

What is a Diamond Tester?

A diamond tester is a device or a machine that is used to check the authenticity of diamonds. The device measures the thermal conductivity of diamonds to ascertain whether a diamond is mined or synthetic diamond.

How Do Specific Diamond Testers Work?

But how exactly does the diamond tester work? The diamond tester works in two ways:

1. Thermal Diamond Tester: The diamond tester measures how quickly a material dissipates heat and based on that one can know if it’s a mined diamond or a lab grown diamond.

2. Electrical Conductivity Diamond Tester: In this method, an electric current is sent through the lab grown diamond to measure its resistance, based on which, the type and origin of a diamond is ascertained.

Additional Lab-Grown Diamond Testing Techniques

Lab grown diamonds are created using two methods – High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). To assess and ascertain if a diamond is manufactured or mined, gemologists use various techniques. Here are some of the techniques:

  • Spectroscopy: This technique is used to analyze light absorption patterns that can help reveal impurities in diamonds.

  • UV testing: This method is used to identify fluorescence differences.

  • X-ray diffraction: X-ray diffraction or XRD helps assess the crystal structure to distinguish between lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds based on the internal characteristics of diamonds.

  • Growth pattern analysis: This method is used to identify features such as inclusions and metallic inclusions, that can help assess whether diamonds are lab manufactured or mined.

Do Lab Grown Diamonds Pass Diamond Testers?

There’s hardly any difference between mined diamonds and lab grown diamonds. Both types of diamonds have similar chemical compositions. That’s because both are made through the same process and are identical in appearance.

However, because laboratory diamonds grown are created in controlled environments, they have lesser inclusions, and more clarity and higher color quality compared to mined diamonds.

So, are lab-grown diamonds considered real even though they are created through artificial process simulations?

The answer is a definitive yes! Engineered diamonds are also considered real diamonds just as mined diamonds.

Why Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Pass a Diamond Tester?

  • Lab grown diamonds are identical to mined diamonds in physical and chemical properties.

  • Both lab created diamonds and mined diamonds are made up of crystallized carbon, leading to the same thermal conductivity. They also have the same electrical properties.

  • When diamond testers assess how well the diamond conducts heat, lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds in the same manner.

  • Both man-made diamonds and natural diamonds pass a diamond tester because their properties are identical.

How to Differentiate a Lab-Grown Diamond from a Mined Diamond?

We’ve discussed and understood how lab diamonds can pass under diamond testers and be tested as real diamonds. But then the question is how can one distinguish between a lab grown diamond and a mined diamond only based on a diamond tester?

That’s where a more detailed and thorough diamond examination is required.

The 4 Cs of Diamond to Distinguish Lab Diamonds and Mined

There are many diamond institutions that have created standard ways of assessing diamonds. These methods help differentiate lab and mined diamonds. One such institution is the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). GIA has standards for measuring the 4 main characteristics of diamonds — the 4 Cs of diamond— cut, clarity, color, and carat.

Cut

The word “cut” doesn’t only apply to lab grown diamond shapes, such as roundovalheartpear, etc. The cut of a diamond also provides a diamond with its angles, facets, proportions, and finishing. The lab diamond’s cut determines its performance and brilliance, making it the most crucial element.

Here’s the standard diamond cut grade chart to help you choose the best lab grown diamonds.

  • Excellent cut or ideal cut

  • Very good cut

  • Good cut

  • Fair cut

  • Poor cut

Color

Even though diamonds appear colorless, a closer inspection may reveal some hues or colors. There are a wide range of colored lab grown diamonds as well. Diamond colors are ranked in alphabetical order.

  • D is regarded as the ideal shade for a diamond.

  • As the diamond color begins to turn yellow or brownish, they are graded as E, F, G, H, and so forth.

Here is a diamond color grading chart you could use as reference for your synthetic diamonds:

Clarity

Clarity refers to the diamond inclusions (internal characteristics) and blemishes (external characteristics) in diamonds. Inclusions and imperfections are graded according to their size, type, and location.

Carat

Carat weight is another of lab diamonds’ 4Cs. A diamond’s weight is measured in carats. Carats weigh 0.200 grammes. 100 points can be used to divide up each carat. Some of the popular carat weight sizes are: 0.5 carat, 1 carat, 1.5 carat, 2 carat lab diamond, 2.5 carat, 3 carat4 carat lab grown diamond, and 5 carats.

Conclusions

Now you know all about diamond testers. The next time you’re buying a lab grown diamond, you will know the best way to assess your gemstones. However, it is advisable to get your lab diamonds assessed by a professional gemologist. If you’re looking to buy certified lab grown diamonds, head to Grown Diamond Corporation.

FAQs

Yes, lab diamonds will pass diamond testers because they are as real as mined diamonds. Lab diamonds are identical and equally strong and hence will pass diamond tester tests.

Engineered diamonds have the same chemical and physical properties as mined diamonds. They are as real as mined diamonds.

Lab grown diamonds and mined diamonds are similar. However, a diamond expert can tell the difference between the two with the help of a diamond tester.

Mined diamonds are at least 50 to 60% more expensive than lab grown diamonds. Lab diamonds are an affordable and cost-efficient choice.

To know if diamonds are real, you must consult a professional gemologist. They follow standard practices and methods to assess if a gemstone is a lab-grown diamond or mined diamond.
